It needs to be noted that ancient Rome survived *almost 300 years* between Commodus's assassination in 192 CE and the year 476 CE, when the western Empire fell. Implosion can take a long while. And some of the systems Rome put into place survived in the eastern (Byzantine) Empire for almost a thousand years longer.
