The reason for this rhetoric is rooting in polycrisis: An unsolved, denied COVID pandemic that continues to rage; rising fascism; the hottest year in 125,000+ years and accompanying severe weather events; income inequality eclipsing the Gilded Age; dramatic, deadly wars; limited democratic responses. It's no surprise that this shit show has turned people's imaginations to the apocalyptic.
